Artificial intelligence is showing up everywhere—from homework helpers to college-search websites. Many families ask us, “Is it OK for my student to use AI while planning for college?”
At The Paratum Scholars, our answer is: Yes, with boundaries. AI can be a helpful assistant, but it should never replace a student’s voice, judgment, or integrity.
Good Uses of AI in the College Journey
1. Initial College Research
AI tools can:
- Generate a list of colleges that match basic criteria (size, region, major)
- Summarize long web pages about majors, programs, or campus life
- Translate information for multilingual families
We still encourage students to double-check facts on official college sites, but AI can save time in the early stages.
2. Organizing Information
AI can help students:
- Turn notes from visits into simple bullet-point summaries
- Create checklists or timelines based on general guidelines
- Draft email templates for politely contacting admissions offices or coaches
Again, students should review and personalize anything sent under their name.
3. Brainstorming, Not Writing, Essays
Where AI can be most helpful—and most risky—is with essays.
Healthy uses include:
- Brainstorming possible topics based on experiences the student describes
- Suggesting structures or outlines
- Helping students see if their draft is clear and organized
What AI should not do:
- Write full essays for the student
- Invent experiences or emotions
- Mimic the student’s voice so closely that the result no longer feels authentic
Admissions officers read thousands of essays; they are getting better at detecting formulaic or AI-generated work. More importantly, using AI to produce full essays raises serious ethical concerns.
Questions to Ask Before Using AI
- Is this helping me think more clearly, or just avoiding hard work?
- Is every sentence still true to my experience and my voice?
- Could I explain or defend this work in an interview?
If the answer to any of these is “no,” it’s time to step back.
The Paratum Approach to AI
Inside The Paratum Scholars Community, we help families:
- Understand where AI can reduce stress (organization, summaries, initial research)
- Set family guidelines for ethical use on schoolwork and applications
- Keep the focus on reflection, integrity, and growth, not shortcuts
Our goal is for students to graduate not only with college offers, but also with the judgment to use new tools wisely.
